Syllabus | Assignments | Canvas

With emphasis on the explosion of fin de siècle and Edwardian texts which challenge mid-Victorian orthodoxies concerning sexuality, religion, morality, and gender roles, this course will trace several forms of literary experimentation in British drama, fiction, and poetry of the period 1880-1914. In the process, we will give attention to late-Victorian poetics, realist fiction, early stirrings of what critics came to call “modernism,” and new forms of psychological exploration and political commentary.

I will ask students registered in the course to submit weekly web postings and prepare a 20 page critical paper.
